Discussion on hearing complaints received by the Sri Lanka Press Council against newspapers

The newly appointed Board of Directors of the Sri Lanka Press Council held a discussion with the editors, lawyers and relevant stakeholders on 24.02.2020 at the Bank Vidupiyasa premises in Rajagiriya, suggesting that complaints received by the Press Council of Sri Lanka should be investigated in a cordial and efficient manner. In particular, the importance of media freedom and the importance of people's rights were discussed.

The inauguration ceremony of the Certificate course in Journalism was held at the auditorium in the Ministry of Mass media with honourable presence of the Hon. Mr. Ruwan Wijewardhena, the Minister of Mass Media. The key note address on “The challenges before the modern Journalists˜ was done by Dr. Tuder Weerasingha who is the former Dean of the Sripalee Campus at University of Colombo'.

Forming an organization for upholding the professionalism, welfare and education of the Diploma holders
Forming an organization gathering all members of diploma holders at Sri Lanka Press Council for further upholding their professionalism, welfare and education is the main aspiration of the Council. By now The Diploma on Media & Journalism Studies was offered for seven batches. Currently, it is being conducted for its 8 th batch.

Accordingly, a discussion will be conducted on 22nd of February, 2020 on behalf of this. Hence, diploma holders representing all groups are kindly invited to participate in this special event.

The Fund Granting Program for welfare of veteran journalists

The Fund Granting Program was launched for the first time for the welfare of Journalists as their main aspiration by Sri Lanka Press Council was established from the Act no 5 of Sri Lanka Press Council in 1973. The final program of the first stage was held on 13 th of June in 2019 for the Veteran Journalist Mr. Meril Perera at his home in Panadura.

Launching welfare programs for veteran Journalists - Organized by Sri Lanka Press Council.

In Accordance with the press council’s main ambition which was established under act No 05 of Sri Lanka Press Council in 1973, the council has launched the fund granting program for the first time for providing welfare for Senior Journalists. The first phase of the programme was launched on 29 th & 30 th of May centering two senior Journalists.

The Press Council Day of Bangladesh

Mr. Koggala wellala Bandula, the chairman of Sri Lanka Press Council , Mr. Kanchana Kumara Ariyadasa , the provincial Journalist, Mr. pushpakumara Jayarathne, Journalist of Lankadeepa newspaper were participated to "The Press Council Day of Bangladesh". The event was held on 17th to 21st which took place in Bangladesh.This can be recognized as a special moment in which the journalists were on a foreign tour.
